While you are enrolled, you will get free access to a variety of apps either on our desktop computers on campus or on your own laptop or device.


ICT’s desktops come equipped with a range of common apps.

  • Adobe Design Premium CS6
  • EndNote
  • Google Chrome
  • Microsoft Office
  • Mozilla Firefox

You can access further apps on our desktops through the Citrix Receiver. This includes:

  • ArcGIS
  • Microsoft Visio
  • Microsoft Visual Studio
  • NVivo 10
  • R-Project
  • SAS
  • SPSS Statistics
  • Stata (only available in certain locations)



We provide a range of apps that can be downloaded for your personal device. Many can be downloaded and used offline, while others will require a virtual private network (VPN) connection if you are off campus or not connected to the University’s network.

ArcGIS is a geographic information system that lets you work with maps and geographic information.

You will need a student authorisation code provided by your course coordinator or lecturer. Contact the Service Desk to arrange a code if you have not been given one.

ArcGIS is available on Windows only.

CSD is a database used by the School of Chemistry that allows you to discover knowledge contained within over 650,000 crystal structures.

You will need to accept the CSD System Use Agreement while connected to the UniSydney network.

CSD is available on Windows and Mac OS X.

Dropbox lets you store your files in the cloud and access them from any browser or device with the Dropbox app installed. Your University Dropbox account comes with 15GB and collaboration apps like Paper and Showcase.

Signing up is an easy three-step process:

  1. Visit the portal and enrol with your UniKey
  2. Check your student inbox for an invitation from Dropbox
  3. Follow the invitation instructions to finalise your activation

Your account is valid for the duration of your degree.

Echo360 is a video capture and streaming service primarily used to record lectures and other live events for later access. The Echo360 app gives you the flexibility and convenience of watching lectures on your own device. You can even download lecture recordings using the University wi-fi and then watch these offline when commuting. 

The Echo360 app is available on these platforms.

To download Echo360 app:

  • go to your unit of study website in your Learning Management System (Canvas) and select ‘Recorded Lectures’ (2019 Recordings for Compass users), in the left-hand navigation menu.
  • download the Echo360 app to your smartphone
  • follow the prompts and enter your University of Sydney email address, followed by your UniKey.

EndNote is a research tool that allows you to organise, publish and share your references and bibliographies. You can get training through our libraries.

EndNote is available on Windows and Mac OS X.

GenStat is a statistical package and data analysis tool. To use GenStat, you need to be connected to the University’s network or via a VPN connection. GenStat is available on Windows only.

MATLAB helps you with numerical computation, visualisation and programming. With MATLAB you can analyse data, develop algorithms and create models.

MATLAB is available on Windows and Mac OS X.

Mathematica is a computational environment used in many scientific, engineering, mathematical and computing fields.

Mathematica is available on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

The Microsoft Imagine library lets you access a variety of Microsoft operating systems and development tools. Microsoft Imagine is available in two subscriptions:

  • Standard – available to all enrolled students. Go to Microsoft Academic Software Centre, select ‘I have an institution issued email address’, register with your student email address and follow the prompts.
  • Premium – available to students in specific faculties and schools below. At the start of semester you’ll receive an email with instructions on how to get access.

You will receive the welcome email if you are a new user (first year student). If you have an existing account, the system will update your account to provide download access for a further 12 months. Go to the ‘Activate subscription’ link, sign in and then ‘purchase’ software ($0.00) as required.

You can access the Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus subscription on up to five of your devices. This gives you access to the latest versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote.

Your Office 365 software will remain activated as long as you are enrolled at the University and connect to the internet at least once every 30 days.

To get Office:

  • visit the Microsoft Online Portal, enter your student email address and password, then select work or school account
  • you will be redirected to the Office 365 page. Select ‘Install’ to download the client
  • open the client and follow the instructions.

Office 365 is available on Windows and Mac OS.

OneDrive for Business is a place where you can store, sync and share your files. It lets you update and share your files from anywhere and collaborate on documents at the same time as other students.

NVivo enables you to handle rich text based information. It automates many manual tasks associated with analysis, such as data classification and sorting.

It is available on Windows and Mac OS X.

Reference Manager is used for publishing and managing bibliographies.

It is available on Windows only.

RStudio is an integrated development environment (IDE) for R. It includes a console, syntax-highlighting editor that supports direct code execution, as well as tools for plotting, history, debugging and workspace management. 

R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics.

R provides a wide variety of statistical (linear and nonlinear modelling, classical statistical tests, time-series analysis, classification, clustering) and graphical techniques, and is highly extensible. The S language is often the vehicle of choice for research in statistical methodology, and R provides an Open Source route to participation in that activity.

To use RStudio, R must be installed.

SAS is a statistical software that allows you to perform data management, visualisation and prediction.

You will need to accept the SAS Student Use Agreement online to obtain a copy of SAS.

SAS is available on Windows and Linux.

StarOffice offers word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing and database editing.

You can download the app now on Android or IOS.

You have access to University Zoom accounts, which can be used to host online meetings from desktops, tablets and phones. Start using your Zoom account by installing it on your devices and logging in with your student email address.

An alternative to installing apps on your computer is the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) portal. Through an online connection you can run specialist apps from your device both on and off campus. This includes:

  • ArcGIS suite
  • Eclipse Classic
  • Eclipse for Java
  • GenStat
  • Mathematica
  • SAS
  • SPSS Statistics

You will need to download the Citrix Receiver and have a reliable internet connection to access the apps.

Be aware that files on the “remote session” are not saved. To save files created using these apps, you'll need to save them to your device (eg. USB drive).


  1. Download the Citrix Receiver app from your device’s app store.
  2. Open the Citrix Receiver app and fill in the following before saving:

    • Address:
    • Description: Usyd Online Software
    • Username: your UniKey
    • Password: your UniKey password
    • Domain: shared
    • SecurityToken: off

Citrix Receiver is available on Windows 7 and 10

A list of available apps will appear, which you can then open.


The Code Repository is a software repository management platform using an enterprise edition of GitHub. The Code Repository is a tool to provide a university-wide resource for code management, code review, and general collaboration at The University of Sydney.
